Tutorial - Ga-In, Bad Temper Mono-lid look

I don't listen to that much K-pop music honestly, but I fell in love with Ga-In of Brown Eyed Girls after seeing her dance in the video for their song Abracadabra. Since then she's become kind of my mono-lid hero.. much like Kiera Knightly is my small-boobs hero. But I digress.

Ga-In had some interesting mono-lid catering makeup going for her single Bad Temper.

Ga-In in all of her sexy, sexy glory...

I decided to take a stab at replicating the look. I did this literally a few hours ago at about 3 in the morning with no references in front of me, so unfortunately it's not super accurate After looking at a few photos of Ga-In after the fact I realized there are quite a few details I screwed up. At any rate, this is my interpretation of her Bad Temper look.

First I applied my foundation normally and primed my lids with Urban Decay's Primer Potion in the regular shade.

For this look I used all Sugarpill pressed eyeshadows. It did occur to me that using a regular black liquid eyeliner might actually have sped up the process, but what can I say.. I like doing things the hard way.

I used this brush to apply Tako to both lids first. I admit one side came up slightly higher than the other, but I was too lazy to redo it.

After that I slowly traced a line above the white with the tip of an angled brush, applying Afterparty wet.

At some point I realized I probably should have done the black winged liner first, but it didn't really matter yet, so I went ahead and added it then to give me some guideline as to where the blue should end. Again, angled brush applying Sugarpill's 'Bulletproof' wet.

Here's what I had so far. I decided to leave the black very thin for the mean time and build it up thicker after I was finished with the blue on top.

I finished the blue line so the end rested a little past where the corner of my eye is. It was still just kind of a sketchy outline at this point.

Once I was confident with my outline I thickened the blue line at the corners so there was a taper and added blue above the winged black liner and overlapped it a bit with the black.

I lined the bottom lash line with black, lightly.

Then I went over that black with a little bit more blue, filled my brows in and added a very, very subtle highlight with Tako to my browbone.

Here's the finished look. The wings tilt are angled further upward than Ga-In's and the color placement is a little off.. I may try this one again, but it still looks okay, so I'm not completely disappointed.

Skinny Bones - Outfit Post

I've been obsessively following StregaForest on tumblr recently because I find myself quite taken with the dark mori look. A huge plus is there seem to be a lot of Gramm pieces posted to Strega Forest, and my closet is like half Gramm already. Today's look was inspired by what I've been looking at there.

There are not words to describe how lovely these Fluevog boots are. I don't wear them often because there's honestly much I feel is worthy of wearing them with. ;-;

I've been wearing variations this ball-jointed doll inspired eye makeup look with this bob wig kind of frequently:

BJDs often have a very high gloss look around the lips and eyes. Occasionally the shine that you see around the eyes looks like it may actually be a painted in highlight (like this), I have a hard time telling.. bjd owners, please enlighten me. At any rate.. a good way to mimic that look around the eye area is to stipple some silver eyeshadow (wet) on the lower lash line and just above your eye.

It does look a little awkward on the upper lid since I'm not a doll and I have to blink.. which reveals the fact that it's just kind of a silvery line sitting awkwardly in mid-lid.. but it's a look I'm constantly working on making better because I really do enjoy doing BJD inspired looks.

I decided not to go for really showy eyelashes today though.. I'll probably try this look with more doll-like falsies in the future. I'd do a tutorial if I thought anyone would be interested.

A is for Arsenic - Taxidermia

I got my A is for Arsenic order in a mail about a week ago and I'm pleased as punch with the items I received! I ordered three items from the new(ish) Taxidermia collection.

The attention to detail with the package design really kind of blew my mind. I have a special place in my heart for beautiful packaging.

I ordered the Vanitas Ladies Grey Shirt and the Vanitas Ladies Black Tank. I pretty much knew from the start that the tank would be entirely too large for me to wear in public without the danger of accidentally flashing passersby.. I got it mostly to replace some old dusty pink tanks that I use as pajama tops.

The Vanitas Shirt, while still large on me, still looks flattering and I'm seriously regretting not getting the Macabre Menagerie shirt because of how beautiful the Vanitas shirt turned out to be.

I took two hasty shots of my outfit from today. All I can say is these tops are incredibly comfortable and I really can't wait for another collection to be launched. Please excuse my non-makeup face and horrible camera work, I was in kind of hurry to get out of the house.

The third item in my order was the Bleeding Antlers necklace, which I admit I almost didn't get because it was black. I wear SO MUCH black that when I wear black necklaces they tend not to stand out against my top/dress/etc. I broke down in the end because I have a serious antler fetish. It's got a gorgeous high-gloss finish and I'm sure I'll find something to wear it with.

Peacock

I've wanted peacock colors in my hair for a long time, but I couldn't bare to completely part with my purple, so I made a compromise. I also gave myself a little trim. I'm wondering when I'm going to get tired of this hairstyle... I guess I have enough wigs that I can change it up whenever I feel like it.

There are actually a total of five colors in my hair. I mixed dye in different cups to make sure it gradated the way I wanted it to. The only color I didn't use completely by itself was Special Effects Limelight, which is just mixed 50/50 with Stargazer Tropical Green. I also used Crazy Color Pine Green, Directions Turquoise and Alfaparf Jean's Color in Violet.

I'm pretty happy with how the colors turned out. They all seem to be very vibrant. No word yet on their staying power, since I've only had these colors in for three days now, but I'll probably post of photos of how it fades.

Also, I know everyone and their mother already has it, but I got Urban Decay's Naked Palette, which I used in these photos. There would be no point in swatching it since every single beauty blogger has already done it.

Some of my favorite things were laying out on my desk recently.. making it all the more clear how much I dearly love black. The perfume is Kat Von D's Sinner, which I wear daily. The nail polish is Illamasqua's semi-matte black, Scorn.

Suppurate System Haul + Review

Recently I placed my first shopping service order with Japonica Market, a shopping service I had not heard of until about a month ago. My order comprised of mostly items from Suppurate System's Japanese webshop and a few h.naoto items.

Suppurate System makes very unique jewelry and accessories with a dark, gothic theme. The shapes and colors are all gorgeous and I've ordered from Suppurate System a couple of times before.

There are two disappointing things about their items;

a) the quality varies wildly from item to item

b) the wait time for items to ship

My contact at Japonica Market was extremely prompt with their responses. I actually tacked the Suppurate System order onto an existing order I had placed for some h.naoto items, which they took into stride.

The basic timeline for my order was:

Oct 12 2:03pm = I add the Suppurate System items to my order with Japonica.

Oct 12 6:50pm = Japonica sends me the invoice for my deposit.

Oct 12 7:02pm = I remit payment for the deposit via paypal.

Oct 12 9:57pm = Japonica sends me a confirmation that they have ORDERED the items.

After this point about a week and a half has passed. They have long since received my h.naoto items.

Oct 30 2:04pm = I ask them about the status of my order.

Oct 30 7:40pm = Japonica apologizes for the delay, but the items still have not arrived. They promise me that they will email Suppurate System to find out.

Nov 9 4:43pm = They get back to me with Suppurate System's response that it will take roughly 3-5 weeks because the items are handmade.

Nov 24 9:16pm = It has been 43 DAYS since my order was placed. More than a month. I email Japonica for a status update. I don't mind the wait as much now that I have an (extremely) rough estimate.

Nov 23 9:54pm = They ask Suppurate System one more time where my order is.

Nov 28 9:21pm = Japonica gets back to me. My items have arrived!

So all in all from the day they placed the order it has taken 47 days.

Most of the items I ordered were from older collections that have been available for quite some time. If you compare a lot of these items to their original product images on the website you'll notice that in many cases different materials were used.

A good example is the Master Key Fruit Necklace. The key used is actually different from the original photo, not by much, but it's definitely not the same. Furthermore the apple looks like a pretty generic and unaltered fake apple. In the photos the apple appears more distressed and the chain used is also different. The chain I received was of a kind of cheap, light plastic rather than the heavy metal ones you see in the product photos.

Suppurate System has a lot of cage necklaces, one of which I've owned for a while. I decided to get another because I like them so much. The Malignant Rose Cage Necklace a great example of a beautiful idea that's been horribly executed. The preserved rose in the cage looks crushed and sad and the silver base it's attached to honestly looks a bit like tinfoil. The hot glue used to attach the rose to the bottom of the cage looks sloppily applied. In some places the paint on the cage is already flaking off. It also came on a chain and in the product photos it hangs from a cord.

My favorite thing from this haul is the Satan Poison Bottle Necklace. It seems to be the most well-crafted and orignal piece, also the most true to its stock photos.

The Fruits Nails Necklace necklace is pretty much exactly how it appears on the Suppurate System website. The only thing I happen to dislike about it is the quality of the key, which is pretty clearly made of plastic rather than metal.

The Ruin Virtue Rose Choker was also a little disappointing, but only because I honestly wasn't expecting the roses to be so small. This item also seems like something I could have made at home. Once again the materials used to make this appear to be slightly different than in the original photos (the chains, roses themselves, etc).

This review came out sounding a lot more negative than it probably should have. I still love Suppurate System, but I've come to terms with the fact that in many areas what you see is not necessarily what you get.

Shiro Cosmetics - Kawaiishadows Collection

So, this past month I placed my first Shiro Cosmetics order. What can I say, they had a Black Friday/Cyber Monday say going on; I had run out of excuses to pass them up.

My order was comprised of a million swatches;

The only full sized products I purchased was the Kawaiishadows.

Since my order turned out to be around eighty dollars, even with the discount, I chose the free shipping option. I received a confirmation email almost immediately afterward.

I placed my order on Novermber 28th and received it December 13th.
Total turn around time = 15 days

Kawaiishadows is comprised of five pastel shades in Yatta (yellow), Banzai (green), Desu (blue), Lolita (purple), and Kawaii (pink). The shadows plus the 2 pieces of Japanese candy that come with them are packed up in a cute little box with pink and blue ribbon. It really does strike me as something that makes a really good present.

The color payoff was good, even on my darker skin. I was especially impressed with Banzai. It shows up looking a little more on the cyan side here, but in real life it's more of a mint green. Lolita was probably my second favorite, with just the shade of pastel purple that I really like. I actually have a few pastel purple's that I want to post comparisons of it next to, since they are all actually quite similar. Kawaii is probably the one the least noticeable or flattering with my skin tone, but who knows, I'd love to find a way to use it.

I did a really simple test on one eye to see if I'd really wear pastel shades like this. I'm not normally the type to wear a lot of pastels. I tend to think it doesn't look as good on my medium toned skin as it does on darker skin or really pale people.. but I was surprised once I was wearing it how much I really enjoyed the effect. I felt like a little sherbet princess!

Overall I'm really pleased with these shadows. To think I was considering swatching them and giving them to someone who wears more pastels than me! *cough*Tempest*cough*

This was Halloween costume from last year. Unfortunately this year I don't have much planned for Halloween, but last year went really well.

I'm wearing the Heavy Red 'Tragic Alice' costume from 2010.

I put a petticoat underneath it and topped it off with my Kaya velvet bow. To this day I think these photos may be the best I've ever looked on camera.

A few weekends back I attended the Palo Alto Festival of the Arts. There were quite a few talented artists that caught my eye, but when I saw the booth for Fantasy Figurative Art by MARCA I knew I'd be leaving with at least one purchase.

The booth was divided into two distinct styles; the right side being the more floral and colorful side, and the left side being distinctly more monochrome and gothy. Naturally I was magnetically attracted to the left side.

Her website states that orders come with name cards and back-stories, however the ones I bought did not, probably because they were not online orders.

Anyway, they're adorable and exactly my style. If you're looking some little friends to grace your shelf or dresser you can find MARCA's work for sale on etsy.

She wrapped up the dolls in this popcorn bag which added a touch of carnival-themed whimsey, which I loved.

And here's a random photo of me enjoying a knish which I bought at the festival. It was delicious.

American Cupcake

Recently my best friend, Lizard, pointed me toward American Cupcake through an article posted on Urban Daddy about the newest item on their menu; Red Velvet Fried Chicken. Red Velvet is one of my favorite cakes and interesting food combinations like this intrigue me to no end, so of course I had to try it.

Myles and I drove up to Sausalito in the afternoon to spend some time walking around the town.

American Cupcake is an adorable on the inside. The interior is almost completely white, but is bathed in a soft pastel glow from the lights on the ceiling which change color regularly.

American Cupcake has a cute selection of cocktails like the Drunken Ballerina (sparking wine and sprinkles with a little toy ballerina floating around in the glass), the Hot Guy (fresh lime, hot sauce, lone star and salt) and the Spiked Milkshake of the day. I asked our waitress for a recommendation and decided upon the Incorrigible; raspberry puree, rosewater, mint and sparkling wine.

I had come for the Red Velvet Fried Chicken but in addition to that Myles and I also ordered the waffle fries, pulled pork sliders and a PBA (peanut butter with apple slices).

The waffle fries come with vinegar, lemon aioli and regular ketchup. They were pretty delicious, though they had no seasoning on their own.

I don't actually have any photos of the Red Velvet Fried Chicken that make it look appetizing in the slightest. But I can tell you that it was lovely and moist on the inside. The red velvet cake breading on the outside has a very subtle flavor, making it just slightly sweet. The cream cheese mashed potatoes were delicious, and the cream cheese flavor was also quite subtle.

Dinner was delicious and by the end I was a little tipsy.. but I did manage to end the night with their Cotton Candy Cupcake which was as adorable as it was delicious. No fancy flavors or anything, but definitely tasty.

A Fish Called Inky

This past January forsook the snowy climate of Upstate New York and fled to the more temperate shores of Northern California to live with my wonderful boyfriend/fiancé, Myles. I can't describe in words how surreal it is for someone who has lived on the East Coast for the past five years or so to step outside in mid-February to gorgeous 78 degree weather and throw flip flops on. I actually thought it was hot today. I'm turning into a big West Coast softy already.

During my cross country move I lost something very dear to me; my lucky bamboo plant. It was a gift from my dad and was often the only other living thing in my apartment bedroom besides me. I decided it wouldn't travel well, so I got rid of it

In my desire to have a living thing in the room (to fill the bamboo shaped hole in my heart) I suggested to Myles that we get a betta fish, which I'd been wanting to do for a while. So today, in addition to acquiring bubble tea and sushi, we visited Seascapes Fish & Pets downtown. Their betta selection was smaller than what you would probably see in a chain like PetSmart, but there were a few really lovely specimens to choose from.

I always thought if I got a betta I'd get one that was bright colored; red or possibly blue.. but when I saw this gorgeous black betta I had to have him.

I have dubbed him Inkwell Quill, or Inky... a name which only came about after I decided to start calling him Inky while obsessing over him in the store. He does look quite like someone dropped a spot of ink in a glass of water. He also has a lovely subtle blue-ish sheen on parts of him which I love.

At any rate, he's a really elegant little guy and it's nice to have a pet again for the first time in many years.

Let Them Eat Cake - WiP

Currently in Drawing our out of class drawing assignment is a historical self-portrait. I drew myself in a Georgian outfit, inspired heavily by the 2006 Sofia Coppola film "Marie Antoinette".

It's definitely still a work in progress, especially on the bustle part of the dress as well as the flowers in the hair (that you can barely tell are there), and the giant ostrich feather in my hair. I'm still debating what to put in the background. It's currently a toss up between a lovely topiary garden or the inside of the Chapel Royal.

These cold, dreary Rochester days often call for a hot drink. Whether you like your coffee straight up, or like me, with all sorts of foofy flavorings and milk and sugar.. they both taste lovely on a cold morning.

The subject of my Computer and Imaging assignment lately has been this coffee cup. Here it is in all its glory, painted from scratch in photoshop. I'm quite pleased with the results.

Back in Rochester

It's a color wheel I personally designed for my 2D Design class. It's made with coloraid paper and pasted onto a grey illustration board. It's really pretty, but cutting out all those tiny little pieces of paper was annoying, to say the very least.

This past Sunday myself and a few friends went back into the woods beside the quarter mile at RIT to shoot for my final Intro to New Media project. The assignment was to create mood/style boards for opening credits to a movie or TV show or really any other cohesive idea, so as you can imagine we're all doing really different things. However for some reason almost all the projects contain a dark aspect to them. Our initial mid-way critique went well and I'm excited to see everyone's final project.

My third project for Intro to New Media was to design a 404 error page for whatever kind of website we wanted. I chose a steampunk theme for a personal website. It started out with a pretty simple sketch.

My first draft was well received in the half-way stage. And I was pretty pleased with the direction it was heading.

My final draft looked a lot more refined and actually got a really positive critique from the rest of my class and my professor.

I'm actually expecting a fairly high grade for this project. I'm excited.

Shape Project Critique Assessment

Unfortunately the best photo I could get of my second 2D Design project was with my camera phone just before I turned it in the be graded. Not the best picture. I assure you it looks better in person.

This project was a shape-based project. We had to pick two adjectives and create a triptych based on the merging on those two adjectives. We started out with a list of something like 10 adjectives which we narrowed down over a few classes to the two we ended up working with. My final words were violent and wavy.

For my written critique (from other students) I got:

Good: flow & shape of design
Bad: transition kind of weird, look good separately.
Change: less negative space in 1st 2.

I'm supposed to critique my critique. Allow me to mention that we had something like 15 minutes to write these things. I think whoever did mine was feeling lazy. I by no means think my piece is perfect. There are a few things I'd change, like:

01. Adding another white bit at the bottom of the middle one.
02. Adding a few more knife-shaped bits on the first panel.

I personally don't think there's anything wrong with my transition. It was ridiculously hard to do considering it was made of cut paper. I mean, how do you think I got all my pieces to fit together so perfectly? Let me tell you, it wasn't by magic. And as far as the comment on the white space; triptychs aren't supposed to be viewed one panel at a time. I purposely placed everything the way I did for an overall aesthetically pleasing wave shape.

With all my HURTS

My first REAL New Media assignment dealt with pairing text with an image. The text is taken from Kaya's "Rose Jail" and the concept is dealing with me as a human doll. I wanted to create something beautiful and also slightly melancholy. Overall, I'm pretty pleased with it. (I HIGHLY suggest you full view)

This image was at least 20 hours of hard work.. I painted/overlayed doll ball-joints over my skin, airbrushed everything and manipulated color, etc. My darling friend Tiff shot all the photos in this shoot, lending me her apartment and her time for which I am exceedingly grateful.

The original image is hideous and embarrassing, but it really shows how far I came from the original photo.

My next New Media project revolves around a Little Red Riding Hood theme! I'm simultaneously looking forward to and dreading it.

Line Project Critiques

Our first project for 2D Design dealt with line. Here are a couple of my preliminary sketches for the assignment.

Here is my final piece (cleaned up in photoshop for improved viewing purposes). As you can see it's basically an edited version of my second idea.

I used a range of curved and straight lines of varying intensity to fill the space. The fluidity of the curved lines create a tension with the grouped straight lines and I feel like this piece completely fulfills the guidelines for the project. It's weakness, I'll be the first to admit, is in the execution. You can't tell from the photo, but this piece is enormous. And drawing clean, curved lines that are that long is VERY difficult. I utilized both india ink applied with a brush and micron pens to create the lines.

The lines themselves could have had a little more variance in boldness. Up close it looks fine, but from farther off it looks a bit skeletal and unfinished. I personally don't have a HUGE problem with that aspect, but it was brought to my attention in critique several times.

This was by far the piece receiving the most positive feedback. It's use of line was unique and definitely made it stand apart from the other projects. It was executed beautifully with excellent craftsmanship. What stands out to me was that it utilized the type of free, squiggly, thin lines that make up hair in a way that separates it from it's original context.

This is the piece that stood out to me as being somewhat weak, not so much dealing with craftsmanship or execution, but due to the fact that I hardly think this piece is about line. Yes, it is COMPOSED of lines, but so is Micky Mouse and you could hardly call either a work that speaks on line as an element of design particularly. It deals so much with shape and depth, I don't think it fulfills the requirements of the assignment.

Otherwise I also feel it suffers slightly from the same problem as my own piece. It's a bit, skeletal and gives the impression of being unfinished... like that of a coloring book.

Hello to a new school year and to yet another blog. With a class to motivate me to post I'm hoping Atelier Rose will be much more successful than my past attempts at an online art journal.

It's nice to be back at school after months and months of no classes. The transition from my basement studio to the apartment has been pretty decent. Of course there's less space in my room, but at least it's all mine.

I think I'm having a fairly decent go at being sociable with my roommates this year. But pretty much anything is an improvement over living in the dorms.

As far as classes go I don't have any glaring issues with any of my professors.. yet. [laughs] But only time will tell. I was fairly lucky last year, as most of them were amazingly friendly and fun to have class with. I can only hope this year will be the same.

This quarter I'm taking a total of 18 credits; the maximum allowed without special permission. My classes are 2D Design, Drawing 1, Principles of New Media Design, Japanese 3 & Fundamentals of Sociology. In truth all of my classes seem pretty challenging so far.. but nothing that I think I can't handle if I put in the hours I need to. Though, I strongly suspect that several all-nighters are in my not so distant future.

Sidebar: 2D fills me with an intense desire to paste 2D of the Gorillaz all over my folders for that class.

[cackles] Perhaps it's for the best that I don't. Already I suspect a few of my teachers are aware of my.. eccentric nature when it comes to style.

Upcoming posts may include pictures of my room now that I've officially stopped living out of boxes. We shall see.
